As part of my compositional search to answer the question, “where does music itself come from?”, I’ve developed a practice of transcribing the rhythms of speech. These transcriptions yield a wealth of information about how people move together in time consciously and unconsciously and this, to me, is an authentic place for music to begin. For Ricochet, I transcribed the rhythms of a particular auctioneer and worked with them to create the piece. — Libby Larsen
